4 Cheer Team Ice Breakers for Team Bonding
This post contains cheer team ice breakers activities. You can use these cheer team ice breakers during the first few weeks of practice for your cheer team bonding.
1. Introduce Yourself
The easiest of the cheer team ice breakers is Introduce Yourself. Have your cheerleaders sit in a circle and go around and introduce themselves. They can state their name, year in school, and a fun fact about themselves. To switch it up, ask the cheerleaders to share a ‘boring’ fact about themselves. The cheerleaders may find more things in common with each other by sharing the ‘boring’ fact!
2. Would You Rather
Another fun and simple cheer team ice breaker is Would You Rather? Get your cheer team up and moving during this game. Check out this Cheerleading Would You Rather Ice Breaker Activity.
Have cheerleaders answer Would You Rather by choosing a side of the room. For example, ask them ‘Would you rather wake up early or sleep in?’ If they would rather wake up early, they would walk to the right side of the room. If they would rather sleep in, they would walk to the left side of the room.
Then prompt them to share with their group about why they chose their side. This cheer team ice breaker gets the cheerleaders talking more than you would expect!
3. Groups Of
A fun way to get your cheer team talking in one of the cheer team ice breakers is called Groups Of. Have your cheerleaders ready to form groups based on similarities. Here is how it works with an example: Tell them, “Make groups of cheerleaders who have the same favorite restaurant as you.”
Then, cheerleaders will start asking their teammates about their favorite restaurants until they have formed groups of cheerleaders who all have the same favorite restaurant.
Next, you can prompt them to chat with each other more by having each group share their favorite restaurant order.
Repeat the game with different prompts to get your cheerleaders talking and bonding!
Ideas for Groups Of Prompts:
- Find a group of people with the same favorite restaurant as you; Share your go-to restaurant order.
- Find a group of people with the same favorite holiday as you; Share your favorite holiday tradition.
- Find a group of people with the same number of siblings as you; Share your siblings names.
- Find someone who has cheered the same amount of years that you have cheered; Share the name of your first team.
- Find a group of people with he same favorite school subject as you; Share why you enjoy this subject.
4. Two Circles
Here is simple cheer team ice breaker to encourage your cheerleaders to talk to each other and get up and moving. There is probably a better name for this activity, but I am calling it Two Circles until I find that name!
Split your team in half. One half of the team forms a circle in the middle, then the other half of the team forms a circle around that circle.
Someone from the outside circle partners with someone from the inside circle. Make sure each cheerleader is facing a partner. As the circles move in opposite directions, the cheerleaders should end up with different partners.
Give the cheerleaders a prompt to discuss. Once they are done discussing, tell the outside circle to move to the right to the next person. Then you can give them the same prompt to discuss or a different prompt.
Ideas for Two Circles
- Favorite food
- Favorite music artist
- Favorite movie
- Favorite school subject
- Favorite fast food restaurant
Taking the time to help your cheer team get to know each other will create a stronger bond. The cheerleaders want to get to know each other, so these cheer team ice breakers are a great way to encourage them to talk to each other. Happy Coaching!
