What You Can Do to Prepare for Cheer Competition Season Early
If you are a high school cheer coach, here are some ways to prepare ahead of time for cheer competition season.
Research Cheer Competitions
Research cheer competitions in your area. Popular cheerleading competitions are hosted by UCA, USA, and Jamz. Reach out to your athletic director for local competitions held by your school district or league.
Score Sheet, Rubric & Division
Based upon the skills and style of your team, decide which division to place your team into. Look into the divisions that are offered at the cheerleading competitions that your team is attending to decide which division your team will compete in. Then, research the score sheets and skill rubrics for the specific division so that you know the skills your team should be working on.
Choreography, Music, & Props
You may want to hire a choreographer to create your team’s routine. Reach out to choreographers early by searching for choreographers in your area or who will travel to your team. After researching the requirements of your team’s division, purchase music for their routine. If your team competes with props such as signs, megaphones, or flags, you can order those before or after your team’s choreography is complete.
Cheer Team Meeting and Cheer Tryouts.
Set up a mandatory meeting for parents, guardians, and cheerleaders interested in joining the competitive cheer team. Write your cheerleading constitution and set yourself up for a successful cheer tryout.
