Cheer Coach Certifications
If you are wondering how to become a cheer coach, one of the first steps that you can take is to take safety courses. Many cheer coach positions and volunteers require safety certifications. Below is a list of courses that you can take to get started on how to become a cheer coach. The cheer coach positions that you take will likely require you to take additional courses, this is not an exhaustive list of courses available.
- CPR & First Aid Certified
- Concussion in Sports on NFHS Learning Center
- Cheer & Dance Safety Certification on NFHS Learning Center
Once you begin coaching, you will most likely need to get a USA Cheer Coach Membership from USA Cheer.
Search for Cheer Coach Positions
There are different ways for how to become a cheer coach.
- Search for cheer coach job openings in your area by using sites such a as EdJoin.com, Indeed.com, and Linkedin.com
- Reach out to local school districts to ask if there are cheer coach job openings near you
- Reach out to local cheerleading gyms near you to ask if there are cheer coach job openings
Volunteer for Local Cheer Teams
If you are not finding cheer coach job openings near you, start by volunteering for cheer programs near you. Reach out to the local high school, junior high, or youth cheer teams to see if there are open cheer coach volunteer positions for the current or upcoming cheer season.
Network, Network, Network!
As they say, it’s not always ‘what’ you know, but ‘who’ you know. Get connected with cheer coaches in your area. Oftentimes, offering to be a volunteer coach can evolve to more opportunities to become a cheer coach. Write a resume of your experience in cheerleading to share with coaches. You never know which programs are looking for helpful cheer coach volunteers!
